Roanoke Police Department and Municipal Court

Enhancing public safety through thoughtful design and expanded space for law enforcement and judicial functions

Project Brief

Nestled on 5.5 acres, this new construction project includes a state-of-the-art facility for the Roanoke Police Department and Municipal Court. The previous building posed many challenges and limitations due to its lack of growth potential. A study identified a new site off Fairway and Park Drive, deemed ideal for its ability to accommodate separate and distinct lobbies for Police and Court, dual vehicular paths, and expansion potential.

The new police headquarters provides ample space for the entire department, featuring significant safety and security upgrades from their previous facility. A new Emergency Operations Center doubles as a storm shelter for staff during severe weather events. The dispatch suite within the new facility offers ample daylight and wellness amenities for staff use. Indoor and outdoor fitness spaces promote regular exercise, while staff break rooms and outdoor plazas encourage camaraderie and team building, balancing the high-pressure nature of law enforcement.

Adjacent to the main facility, a support building serves as a training space for the department, including classrooms, offices, and a shooting range. This building is used by the Roanoke police department and neighboring agencies. The project was designed in collaboration with FGM Architects and includes modern amenities to support the department’s operational needs and community engagement.
