St. Mark’s School of Texas – Science Building

Innovative indoor and outdoor learning environments provide spaces for hands-on exploration and collaboration

Project Brief

The St. Mark’s School of Texas is currently underway with a major science facilities initiative, including the renovation of the 24,000 square foot McDermott-Green building and the construction of the new 56,000 square foot Winn Science Center. Physics labs and Middle School science rooms will be housed in renovated space, while the new building supports the more demanding technical requirements of Chemistry, Biology, DNA, and Environmental Science labs. Innovative learning spaces include a Maker Lab and Shop, Digital Technology Lab, Robotics Lab, Greenhouse, 100-seat Planetarium, and a 250-seat auditorium. A pond, native landscape areas, and raised cultivation beds support outdoor learning in Biology and Environmental Science.

Instructional spaces are organized around a two-story skylit Commons, envisioned both as informal learning space and as a venue for special events. Continuous balconies along the second-floor corridors will allow the Commons to function as an arena for robotics competitions and other gatherings. A large stair open to the Commons connects the two levels and provides an overlook at the double-height Study Lounge, and a two-story glass connector between the addition and renovated building provides pedestrian linkage as well as additional collaboration and study space.

Robert A. M. Stern Architects served as design architect, with GFF as the Architect of Record.

St. Mark’s School of Texas is dedicated to developing boys into men of character and integrity, fostering academic excellence, leadership, and service. This science facilities initiative aligns with the school’s mission by providing state-of-the-art spaces that enhance scientific education and innovation. The new and renovated facilities offer dynamic environments for hands-on learning and exploration, supporting both individual study and collaborative projects. The integration of indoor and outdoor learning spaces reflects the school’s commitment to comprehensive education, preparing students to excel in a rapidly evolving world.
