Project Brief

The Longview ISD Early Childhood Learning Center, a free-standing 76,000 SF facility, will serve 350 children between six weeks and four years of age. The first of its kind in Texas, this new center expands pre-kindergarten access for early intervention while offering daycare for district employees; an advantage that enhances both teacher recruitment and retention efforts.

The naturally sloping site and complex organizational needs of the building were resolved through a series of building forms representing stepping stones for each of the age groups, connected by threads of transparent circulation weaving through and connecting the program.

Each stone is a self-contained pod of classrooms, service spaces, and an open commons area, all attuned to the unique needs of the age group housed within. The intentional separation of the ‘stones’ results in protected courtyards that serve as age-specific playgrounds and an open-air amphitheater that doubles as an outdoor classroom when the weather is agreeable. Inlets between the stone shaped pods create opportunities for additional site-specific curriculum, including a small community garden and a space for outdoor musical instruments.

The facility also contains an administration area, food service/dining multi-purpose area and a gross motor skills space. The infant and toddler pods are programmed in more traditional daycare standards with the three and four-year-old pods designed to support discovery and exploration through immersive learning environments as opposed to traditional classroom designs.

Brightly colored perforations freckle the façade and carry their way into organizational and programmatic elements within the building – celebrating a childlike whimsy and energy in a consistent and collective experience through the project’s entirety. At night, the building is illuminated to create a colorful billboard that highlights the importance the city places on its youth and acts as a gateway to the city of Longview.
