The Hockaday School – Residence Hall

This renovation and addition to an existing three-story, 42,250 square foot residence facility for an all-girls preparatory school knits together two separate residential wings, formerly connected only by an open walkway at the ground level, into one completely enclosed building connected at all levels. The building houses approximately eighty students in sixty dormitory rooms.

The renovation updates 38,000 square feet of existing building space and adds a new 7,200 square foot “connector,” providing a new entry and elevator lobby at the ground level, with additional support and amenity spaces above. The amenity spaces include student lounges, study rooms, music practice rooms, and expanded staff apartments, as well as a renovated infirmary and Parent Association volunteer room at the ground level.

The design addresses the need for a cohesive and modern residential environment that enhances student life. By connecting the residential wings and adding new amenities, the renovation creates a more integrated and supportive living space. The inclusion of study rooms, lounges, and music practice areas fosters a balanced and enriching residential experience, promoting both academic success and personal well-being.
