John Bunker Sands Wetland Center

A center dedicated to research, education, and community engagement within a vast man-made wetland habitat

Project Brief

The John Bunker Sands Wetland Center serves as the hub of environmental and social interest for the 3,100 acres of man-made wetland habitat on the Rosewood Seagoville Ranch property. The Center provides extensive opportunities for research, education, wildlife observation, and community gatherings. The 5,400 square foot facility is designed to fulfill various roles including a staging and exhibit hall for interactive exhibits, a fully equipped research lab for studying wetland plants and animals, a classroom for hands-on educational activities, an office for the on-site manager, and an observation deck for viewing the wetlands. Additionally, the building houses restrooms, a prep kitchen for larger events, and private sleeping quarters for research students. The John Bunker Sands Wetland Center is part of a larger conservation effort that integrates environmental education with practical conservation practices. The center is a key part of the East Fork Wetland Project, which naturally filters nearly 90 million gallons of water daily, demonstrating a sustainable closed-loop urban water cycle. This project couples innovative water reuse strategies with habitat conservation, providing a unique educational resource that has increased conservation literacy among thousands of students and visitors. The design of the center emphasizes both functionality and environmental stewardship. The use of native vegetation and prescribed burning techniques helps maintain the wetland habitat, while the rotational grazing of beef cattle supports the ecological diversity of the area. The center also features small islands planted with native vegetation, providing nesting and feeding habitats for birds, further showcasing the integration of human engineering with natural ecosystems
