First United Methodist Church of Dallas – Developmental Learning Center

Dallas, Texas

GFF has worked with First United Methodist Church of Dallas since 2008 on various projects, including the renovation of their Developmental Learning Center. This project involved updating 46,000 square feet of interior space across four levels of the west wing, originally constructed in 1924. The main goals were to give the first-floor Developmental Learning Center a cosmetic facelift, make the children’s and youth ministry spaces on the second and third floors more functional and efficient, and relocate the church staff offices to the ground floor.

The design honors the building’s historical significance while incorporating modern efficiencies. New interior door frames, sidelights, and transoms were crafted with wood trim to match the original structure’s profiles. Exterior windows that had been blocked were restored to their original condition. The original gym on the third floor was transformed into a multi-purpose room equipped with a LED screen and audio/video capabilities for events and alternative worship services, while still supporting recreational functions. High ceilings, natural light, and an industrial aesthetic with exposed ductwork and conduit characterize the design.

The Developmental Learning Center provides a nurturing, faith-based environment for children, offering educational childcare from infancy through preschool. The curriculum is research-based, focusing on individualizing learning experiences to prepare children for future success.

This project from GFF’s Faith & Community Studio showcases the firm’s commitment to creating functional, welcoming spaces that support the church’s mission of fostering spiritual and community growth. The project received a Preservation Achievement Award from Preservation Dallas in 2021.
