A permanent home for State Fair operations, shaped by the people and the history of Fair Park
The new State Fair of Texas Administration Building creates a permanent, modern workplace for the people who run one of Texas’ most enduring public traditions. Located at the heart of Fair Park, the building consolidates year-round operations with the specific demands of the fair season, balancing the focused work of State Fair staff with the energy, access, and activity of the annual event.
The project began with a careful study of how the State Fair works throughout the year. For much of the calendar, the building supports a compact administrative team responsible for planning, operations, finance, marketing, concessions, brand experience, IT, HR, and nonprofit activities. During the Fair, the building shifts into a broader role as staff, vendors, credentialed personnel, and visitors move through the site. The design responds to this administrative/operational interplay with clear circulation, controlled access, flexible offices, and gathering spaces that can adapt as the organization’s needs change.
Site selection was central to the project’s success. After evaluating multiple locations throughout Fair Park, the team selected a prominent corner of the Midway that places State Fair staff close to the activity of the annual event while preserving key Midway space. The building’s footprint consolidates administrative functions, removes temporary structures, and positions the organization for future expansion within one of Dallas’ most distinctive civic and cultural landscapes.
The architecture draws from Fair Park’s Art Deco character without directly replicating its historic buildings. Proportions, colors, materials, and details reference nearby structures, including the agricultural buildings, while contemporary construction and workplace planning allow the building to serve the State Fair’s current and future needs. A portico, ribbon-like windows, ribbed metal panels, stucco, and carefully composed openings help the building feel connected to its surroundings while establishing its own identity.
Inside, the design becomes more colorful and expressive. Midway energy, Texas character, State Fair history, and Art Deco references come together through lighting, graphics, artifacts, furniture, and material choices. Historic posters, tickets, trophies, and other objects from the State Fair’s archive are integrated into the workplace, creating small moments of discovery that connect staff and visitors to the organization’s history.
The project also creates a brighter and more functional environment for the people behind the Fair. The previous administration building included narrow corridors, limited daylight, difficult wayfinding, and offices without windows. The new building gives every office access to natural light, brings borrowed light deeper into the workplace, and organizes departments around clearer circulation and shared spaces.
More than a replacement for an outdated office, the State Fair of Texas Administration Building is a long-term investment in the people, operations, and traditions that sustain the Fair. Designed for durability, flexibility, and change, it adds a new chapter to Fair Park while giving State Fair staff a workplace worthy of the work they do year after year.
