Westwood School Landscape

Dallas, Texas

A truly transformational project, GFF Landscape and Architecture studios teamed up in taking a vacant warehouse and its 7.08 acre site and retrofitting it into a stunning modern school. Previously the building and site was relatively sterile and built strictly with a utilitarian approach. In the building’s adaptive reuse, the combined GFF design sought to liven up its corridors and activate its neglected spaces. At core of the new school’s design was inviting the normal functions of the school outdoors and into rooms specifically tailored to suit different levels of learning, eating, and of course play. Once sullen corners of the building were reformed into an outdoor class amphitheater, classroom porches, and an outdoor barbeque. New entries were created to greet its students and faculty, as well as a large outdoor gathering area capable of holding a range of school events. Shaded by a modern brise soleil, the lunchroom was given an extension outdoors allowing students a fresh-air reprieve. New ballfields and playground options supply the students with ample recreational opportunities. The Westwood School showcases GFF’s ability to combine its talented disciplines to reinvigorate a once neglected site.
