Parish Episcopal School – Gymnasium

The gymnasium introduces a new architectural language of movement and light to a former Exxon/Mobil Research Facility

Project Brief

The Parish Episcopal School Gymnasium represents the first phase of an adaptive reuse program to convert I.M. Pei’s 1982 Exxon/Mobil Research Facility into a private school. This initial intervention moderates the scale of the existing building while creating a new, youthful, and invigorating addition to the campus. The curving wall reveals entrances to athletic facilities within the building and addresses the outdoor athletic fields. Minimizing the roof structure allows a translucent clerestory, providing glare-free daylighting for the gymnasium interior, creating an uplifting new interior space. Parish Episcopal School’s mission is to provide an innovative and engaging educational environment that promotes academic excellence, creativity, and personal growth. This gymnasium project aligns with the school’s mission by transforming an iconic structure into a dynamic space that supports physical education and athletic programs. The thoughtful design ensures that natural light enhances the gymnasium, creating a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere for students. The integration of the gymnasium with the outdoor athletic fields further promotes a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor activities, fostering a holistic approach to student well-being and development.
