As women, we often wear the hat of caretaker – for our family, our friends, our communities. With many of us actively participating in the work force, the thing that usually takes the hit is our own well-being. Somewhere along the way, we learned that taking time out for our own self-care makes us selfish in some respect. This couldn’t be farther from the truth though. By keeping up with this aspect of our lives, we are given new perspectives and new energy that allow us to show up for others in new ways – better ways. We are renewed and refreshed and that spills out into our relationships, both with others and ourselves.
Taking time out to move, or be more healthful, gives us the power to create the life we want to live for ourselves and others. It provides forward momentum, which is never a bad thing. I can’t think of a single woman who has ever run a 5K, reached a fitness goal, or simply just carved out time to meditate each day, who didn’t feel more empowered by her accomplishments. And it’s that empowerment that gives us the strength to go out and uplift our families and our communities, making the world a better place.
On this National Women’s Health and Fitness Day, let’s create a new narrative that celebrates women and all the ways they choose to become better versions of themselves.
