The Episcopal Church of Transfiguration

Dallas, Texas

The master plan for the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration considered expansion for both the Church and the School on this 9-acre site. The needs included a parish hall, education, office and music rehearsal space. The design resulting from the program called for 33,000 SF in two buildings flanking the original 500-seat church built in 1968. These buildings, proposed to be built in phases, are connected with the church by the gathering arcade. This skylit space dramatically illuminates the church’s narthex and houses a labyrinth modeled after Chartres Cathedral. The initial addition of 19,000 SF included a parish hall and kitchen, conference and classrooms, nursery, bride’s room and parlor. A bell tower serves to announce arrival and to vertically punctuate the more horizontal design of the addition.
