First United Methodist Church of Dallas Developmental Learning Center

Dallas, Texas

GFF has worked with FUMC in Dallas, Texas since 2008 on various projects. This project renovated 46,000 SF of interior space on four levels of the west wing which was originally constructed in 1924. Project goals were to give the first floor Developmental Learning Center a cosmetic facelift, renovate the interior of the children’s and youth ministry spaces on the second and third floors to make them more functional and efficient, and relocate the church staff offices to the ground floor.

As a historically significant building without a Landmark designation, much care was taken to honor the past while adding modern efficiencies. New interior door frames, sidelights, and transoms were designed with wood trim frames to match the profiles of the original structure. Existing exterior windows that had been blocked up were restored to their original condition. The original gym on the third floor was converted into a multi-purpose room equipped with a 13’x28’ LED screen and audio/video capabilities for dinners, speaker events, and an alternative worship service while still supporting recreation functions. The gym floor and ceiling were restored to their original condition. The design embraces high ceilings, natural light and a slightly industrial feel with exposed mechanical ductwork and conduit.

In 2021, this project received a Preservation Achievement Award from Preservation Dallas.
