When selecting a site for a new facility, churches are more frequently considering former retail locations as an option. Vacant retail space can be acquired relatively easily given the decline in brick-and-mortar sales over the past decade. Repurposing a former retail building such as a sporting goods or grocery store brings with it both challenges and opportunities. Some considerations include the need for additional restroom facilities and acoustics both within the building and to the adjacent neighborhood. However, there are significant advantages such as reduced construction time and cost, large volumes, and potential to leverage adjacent retail parking.
Fellowship Church, with locations across Texas and Florida, engaged GFF to convert a formerly vacant Gander Mountain store into their newest facility in Frisco. The building now accommodates worship for over 1,300 people, as well as gathering space, a café, offices, classrooms, and over 12,000 sq. ft of children’s ministry space.
Renovations for Fellowship Frisco began in mid-2019, and the grand opening was held in January 2020.
