Portrait of a GFFer: Sandra Beer

Meet Sandra. Sandra was born in Missouri, but grew up in Pittsburg, Kansas.  As an undergraduate student, she attended Kansas State University and received a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Architecture.  She then went on to attend the Rhode Island School of Design, where she received a Master of Architecture.  Having worked previously at GFF after graduating from RISD, she rejoined the office in 2012. Read below for more about Sandra!

  1. I’m from Southeast Kansas, the Fried Chicken Capital of the world, but I actually don’t like it! I prefer the onion rings. Yum!
  2. I am not a fan of Dorothy or her entourage.  Perhaps I watched The Wizard of Oz way too much as a kid.
  3. I’m often asked what I liked most about attending RISD.  I’d say it was the opportunity to take a host elective classes outside of the Department of Architecture, like glass blowing and jewelry making!
  4. I have two amazing children, a six year old daughter and a three year old son, who joyfully fill my time outside of the office!
  5. As a child, I used to spend Friday nights at the skating rink with my friends.  So I’ve recently been teaching my daughter how to roller skate, and it’s surprising how quickly I’ve picked it back up.  No serious wipe outs yet!! (knock on wood…)
  6. Favorite vacation spot – Hawaii.  Kauai is incredible!!
  7. Current tunes I’m listening to – St. Vincent and Spoon.
  8. Favorite throwback movie that I love to watch occasionally – Donnie Darko.
  9. Current side project – I’m making a replica of the iconic Swan dress worn by Bjork at the 2001 Academy Awards ceremony to wear to my daughter’s school auction.  The auction theme is actually MTV Music Awards, but I doubt anyone will know the difference in ceremonies!  Hope it turns out fluffy!
  10. Favorite adventure with my kids – going to the State Fair of Texas every year.  They love it and there is no one greater than Big Tex (except Santa Claus)!
