The Park Cities YMCA is a prominent institution dating back to the mid 1940’s. The original building is outdated and undersized for the extensive programs and growing membership base the Y now serves. GFF was hired to assist with zoning and design a new building occupying the same city block the building currently occupies. The building context was extremely important and drove many of the design decisions in this project. The site fronts onto a major public/retail street, Preston Road, and is surrounded by private family homes on all sides. A new 284 car underground parking garage is designed to serve visitors and staff as well as the adjacent Unitarian Church during Sunday services. The new 58,500 SF building and adjacent soccer field are directly on top of this garage. The building design presents a prominent public entry to Preston Road while still maintaining the desired residential scale through the use of gable roofs, porches, covered walkways, and building materials compatible with the surrounding residential neighborhood.
