The design/build team of GFF and Julian P. Barry General Contractor Inc. was selected in a 1993 design competition to create a new athletic facility for the Ursuline Academy of Dallas. Challenged by a constrained and irregular site, the selected scheme knits together a new gymnasium. A shared lobby provides a new main entrance to the complex while maintaining views to the west towards a wooded creek. Outside, the new 35,000 SF facility uses red brick, cast stone and a gabled roof to conform with the character of the existing campus. Inside, the gymnasium and lobby structural elements are expressed, giving texture and detail to the main spaces by celebrating the elements of construction.
