The Crate & Barrel Home Store at 777 Boylston Street in Boston’s Back Bay establishes a street front presence in a busy pedestrian area. Four contiguous buildings dating from 1901 to 1903 were renovated for the store including three floors of retail space and a basement level stockroom. The four existing buildings, constructed with varying structural systems and floor elevations, demanded level changes in some areas. The creation of large floor openings required creative engineering design coupled with detailed structural investigation on site. The resulting space defines a variety of unique retail environments, blending Crate & Barrel’s signature interior elements with the historic character of the original buildings.
